The dad was jailed, this happens to him so much that its not even considered a bother. Hes happy that he has his son is his again and that he celebrated by getting drunk and jailed.

pg34 Mark Twain "He (judge) reckoned a body could reform the old man (pap) with a shotgun, maybe, but he didn't know no other way." The judge that didn't want to separate pap from his son is now thinking twice about it. Just after spending all this time trying to reform pap and congratulating him, the judge is now mourning him. This tells us there is no more hope for pap.
